TURKISH TOURISM WAS A GREAT SUCCESS IN 2012

2012 has been a successful year for Turkish tourism with visitors flooding to the Mediterranean country from all over the world. The tourist visitor figures for 2012 have seen an increase on those recorded in 2011 and there are high expectations for the year to come.

In the January-November period of 2012, Turkey attracted over 30 million tourists according to figures from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The number of tourist arrivals to Turkey rose by 0.59 percent to 30.4 million in the first 11 months of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011.

After a successful Christmas season figures for December are yet to be confirmed but initial reports suggest that over one million tourists visited Turkey in December 2012. This would take the total number of tourist arrivals in Turkey to over 31 million and the annual income generated by Turkish tourism to USD 23.5 billion in 2012.

Turkey’s tourists come from all over the world due to the expansion of Turkish tourism in emerging markets. In 2012 German tourists won the accolade for the highest number of tourist visitors to Turkey hitting 4.8 million, followed by 2.4 million tourists from the UK.

It is no surprise that Turkish tourism has had such a good year. The country was voted as the sixth most popular tourist destination in the world by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

The Turkish government has invested heavily in the tourism industry in recent years and has already seen great results. 2013 is expected to bring further success to Turkey’s booming tourism industry.
